Define the useful version
Start with who will use it, what they need to finish, and what the software has to work with. That gives the build a concrete scope and a way to tell whether it's doing its job.

- Database design and changes to how information moves through the product.
- Tests, deployment instructions and documentation for the next person working on the code.
Make the handover part of the build
Agree on the behavior, the important failure cases and the deployment process alongside the feature itself. A working demo is useful. Being able to run, change and support it is what makes it useful next month.
